Habits of Naturally Slim People

Have you ever overheard people talking about how they do eat and never work out and you want to slug them in their toned stomach? Well, sometimes, aside from good genes and eating habits, there are some habits they have that you can easily work into your routine.

Do Fidget

I am constantly bouncing my leg or tapping my foot and I found out that people who fidget tend to weigh less than those that sit still because just by being a wiggle worm, they can burn up to 500 calories a day. That’s the same as walking for an hour at a four mile an hour pace! If you don’t think you can do that, try pacing while brain storming, walking around when you’re on your phone, park farther away, take the stairs, or stand up once an hour and take a brisk walk around your building or parking lot. Every little bit helps.

Don’t Be Distracted

When you eat your lunch, don’t sit at your desk or do work of any kind. Make eating lunch an event all on its own. That way you’re more conscious of what’s happening and that your putting food in your mouth. Focus on the way it looks, the way it smells, the way it tastes and the way it feels in your mouth. People who focus on what they’re eating are more mindful about what they’re eating, eat less and feel more satisfied after eating.

Do Customize Your Order

Eating out and eating healthy is not the easiest the thing in the world, so in an effort to save calories, don’t be ashamed to customize your order. If you want steamed vegetables instead of fries, get it. If you want extra greens on your sandwich, no mayo, no dressing, or no bun, just say so. With more and more people adopting a healthier lifestyle these days, there shouldn’t be a problem getting what you want. Another great tip I heard came from Al Roker. He was talking about portion size in restaurant and when you order your food, ask for a to go box and immediately put half of your food in it so you’re not tempted to eat the whole thing.

Don’t Eat It If You Don’t Like It

It’s OK to have the kid mentality and if something’s yucky, don’t eat it. I once ordered a dessert that I probably shouldn’t have ordered in the first place and it just wasn’t that good, so I didn’t finish it. If you pop something in your mouth and it’s too salty, too sweet, tasteless or unsatisfying, put the fork down and push it away. It’s not worth the calories you’re ingesting and the workout you’ll need to do to burn it off.

Do Throw It Away

Sometimes being a member of the Clean Plate Club isn’t the best membership to have. How many times are you tempted to eat leftovers from your kid’s plate or your husband’s plate even if you’re full just because they were going to throw it away if someone didn’t eat it? Sometimes if Glen isn’t going to finish his meat or something, he’ll offer it to me and I take it. I’m full. I don’t know why I do it. Maybe because I was always told not to waste food. Well, we need to knock it off. Yes, I know there are starving children in Ethiopia, but overeating just to avoid throwing food away is almost more wasteful than just throwing it in the garbage. If we eat just to not throw food away, we’re carrying around waste weight and being overweight can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, or any number of other health issues, so if you’re full but there’s still food on your plate, push it away and place your napkin on top of it. It’s also a good idea to get up from the table when you’re done eating so you’re not tempted to take another portion.
