GOLDEN VALLEY (AP) - The Animal Humane Society has rescued more than 50 dogs living in deplorable conditions outside a Pine County home.

Zack Nugent of the Animal Humane Society says 53 hound mixes, including two puppies, were brought to the organization's Golden Valley office after they were removed from the home in late October and early November. The owner, a breeder, surrendered the dogs because he became overwhelmed and unable to properly care for them.

A response team found the dogs were being kept outside among piles of garbage without adequate shelter and little-to-no opportunity for socialization. Many of them had scrapes and wounds from fighting.

All of the dogs needed rehabilitation and behavior modification due to the lack of human interaction.

Ten of the dogs have been adopted and 22 others are ready for new homes.
