RICE - Fresh and local foods could be coming soon to a farmers market in Rice this summer.

The Rice Women of Today recently submitted the idea of a famers market in town to the city council. Jennifer Popp is organizing the market for the group and says they're waiting for a large gathering permit to be approved at the April 18th City Council meeting.

"We have been working with the City of Rice since last year to make the Farmers Market a reality for the community," Popp says.

The market would be held every Tuesday in June through September. It would be at the City Park on Main and Division Street. The location was suggested by the city council based on parking availability and visibility.

Popp says the city attorney will be reviewing proposed guidelines and their application. She and her husband live on a small hobby farm and have heard interest from others in town to bring in a regular farmers market.

"Our hope is that this will be a community gathering where people come to support each other and have access to healthier food options."

The group is unsure of how many vendors they expected to participate in the market during its first year.
