Grand Jury: Minnesota Officer Justified in Fatal Shooting

ANOKA (AP) — A grand jury has found a Lino Lakes police officer was justified in fatally shooting a motorist in May.

The Anoka County grand jury found that Sgt. William Owens' use of deadly force was lawful.

The MinnesotaBureau of Criminal Apprehension says Owens was dragged down Interstate 694 after he tried arresting 31-year-old Sam Holmes during a traffic stop in Fridley on May 8.

Owens was trying to arrest Holmes on outstanding warrants and suspicion of drunken driving.

Owens is a nine-year veteran of the Lino Lakes Police Department.

The grand jury convened this week and heard testimony from 15 witnesses.
