Governor Dayton Considers Special Session

After-effects of June 21, 2013 wind storm in the St. Cloud metro area

ST. PAUL (AP) – Governor Mark Dayton’s office is in talks with Minnesota legislative leaders about a special session to provide disaster aid to communities hit by severe storms.

Deputy chief of staff Bob Hume confirmed the deliberations Thursday. He says no timetable has been set and that Dayton wouldn’t summon lawmakers back to St. Paul without a bipartisan agreement limiting the emergency session’s scope.

President Barack Obama recently signed a federal declaration for 18 Minnesota counties hit by severe storms, high winds and flooding in June.  Included on that list are Stearns and Benton counties. It paves the way for federal aid for recovery and rebuilding efforts, but that must be partly matched by the state.

Republicans have pushed for a special session to repeal a new tax on warehousing that won’t formally kick in until April.
