SARTELL - Gopi Ramanathan, a Sartell High School senior, was recently selected by U.S. Secretary of Education John King as a 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Ramanathan is one of 160 high school seniors to be selected for the honor. Students are selected who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service and community contribution.

Ramanathan is president of the state student council association and central student council division and plays soccer for Sartell, he also played a big part on the school knowledge bowl team. His academic interests include politics and leadership, geography, science and math.

He will be honored for his accomplishments in Washington D.C. on June 19th-21st.

Each Presidential Scholar is offered an opportunity to name their most influential teacher. Ramanathan chose Karrie Fredrickson of Sartell High School.

Created in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has honored almost 7,000 of the nation's top performing students.
