COLLEGEVILLE -The College of St. Benedict celebrated its 30th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day by honoring children's author Shelly Boyum-Breen with the Breaking Barriers award.

Boyum-Breen writes the popular series Shelly Bean the Sports Queen.

Her series features a strong willed 7-year-old girl that likes to take on a challenge and learn how to play new sports. Each book takes its reader on a new adventure and provides tips as to how to play the sport featured in the story.

Boyum-Breen enjoyed playing different sports as a kid and was inspired by her own childhood to write the series. She says "as a kid I didn't get into reading, their wasn't anything that grabbed my attention until Where the Red Fern Grows, in about 4th grade and that's because their was a dog involved in that book."

Boyum-Breen attended CSB from 1992-1994 she spent most of her time playing for the Blazers basketball team.
