Gay Rights Groups Turn Attention to Bullying

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota gay rights activists and allies are getting ready for what they hope is a final push at the Capitol for a bill that would require all public school districts to develop and enforce a plan to reduce bullying.

OutFront Minnesota will host a rally for the bill Monday in the Capitol rotunda. The group that was a prime force behind last year’s gay marriage bill has been working for much longer on policies to reduce bullying.

Backers say it will protect children perceived as different. But the bill exposes some of the same cultural divides as in the gay marriage debate.

The legislation has also encountered resistance from groups representing superintendents and school board members who see a potential burden on schools.
