Gary L. Akers, 70, Zimmerman

October 29, 1945 - February 21, 2016

Gary Lawrence Akers, age 70, of Zimmerman, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016. He was born October 29, 1945 Minneapolis, MN the son of Vernon and Annabelle (Ziebarth) Akers.

Gary grew up in Central City, Iowa where he attended a one room school and then Central City High School. His family then moved back to Princeton in 1965. Gary worked various labor jobs within the construction industry before beginning work at Hoffman Engineering where he worked for over 30 years. After many years of dating, Gary was united in marriage to Joan Biniek on June 5, 2002 at the Anoka County Courthouse. Gary loved his Harley Davidson motorcycles and attending dirt track races at Cedar Lake and in Princeton.

Gary is survived by his wife Joan; son, Erik (Rebecca) Akers; grandson Matthew Akers; great-grandson Bennett Akers; siblings, Glenn Akers, Marilyn (Michael) Trunk and Larry (Lori) Akers; special uncle Larry Ziebarth; his cat Sylvester; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 24, 2016 from 4-8PM with a prayer service beginning at 5:30PM at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Princeton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Christ Our Light Catholic Parish, North Campus in Princeton. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Baldwin Cemetery, Princeton.
