MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Former Vice President Walter Mondale is recovering from heart surgery.

Mondale underwent the surgery Wednesday at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. His family said in a statement he is doing fine and is expected to make a full recovery.

Mondale is 86. The surgery comes soon after the death of his wife, Joan.

Walter Mondale was vice president in the 1970s, a Democratic nominee for president in the 1980s and an ambassador to Japan in the 1990s.
