MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A former Minneapolis mayoral candidate says he was injured in an attempted theft of his iPhone at the Mall of America.

Former Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew says he was attacked outside a coffee shop at the mall Thursday evening.

Andrew says he was at a table when someone grabbed his phone and ran out. He says he chased the thief, and two young women waiting outside the Starbucks tackled him. He says one beat him on the head and face with a billy club.

Eighteen-year-old Letaija Shapree Cutler-Cain of Brooklyn Park is charged with aggravated robbery and assault, and remains in jail.

Andrew needed nine stitches, but he got his phone back from a passer-by.

Andrew placed second to Betsy Hodges in the November election.
