AURORA (AP) - The former boyfriend of a woman fatally shot outside the American Legion in Aurora is charged in her death.

A criminal complaint says 51-year-old John Plevell shot Julie Hildreth with a rifle from about 25 feet away while she was standing outside the legion club with her new boyfriend last Sunday.

A judge in St. Louis County set bail for Plevell at $1 million during a court appearance Thursday. Plevell is charged with intentional second-degree murder. The complaint says Plevell had told others he was upset about Hildreth's new relationship.

Authorities say Plevell has denied shooting Hildreth. The complaint says Plevell left the legion and went home when Hildreth and her boyfriend arrived Sunday.
