DULUTH (AP) — About three weeks after the Lake Superior Zoo was damaged by unprecedented rainfall and flooding, the facility is set to reopen on Friday.

The flood didn't touch the zoo's main building, primate center and Australia exhibit. However, it damaged a barnyard exhibit and killed 11 animals housed there. It also damaged enclosures for a polar bear and two harbor seals.

Peter Pruett is the zoo's director of animal management. He hopes visitors will return, even if some popular animals won't be on exhibit right away. He says visitors can also enjoy the beautiful landscape and zookeeper talks.

Zoo spokeswoman Keely Johnson says most of the cleanup and debris removal is complete. She says the final tasks include clearing paths and planting vegetation
