MELROSE -- Firefighters responded to a fire at St. Mary's Church in Melrose last (Friday) night.

Church officials say the fire started around 5:00 p.m. and the Melrose fire department was on the scene shortly after the blaze started.

Most of the damage seems to be on the west end of the church.

No one was hurt, the fire caused about $1 million in damages.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating. The Department of Public Safety says federal agents will be contacted, which is standard procedure in fires at religious structures.

Crews from Sauk Centre, Melrose and Freeport battled the blaze.
