Final Goodbye to Downtown Minneapolis Shopping Landmark
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Shoppers were looking for last-minute bargains as a downtown Minneapolis retail landmark prepared to close its doors for the last time.
The downtown Minneapolis Macy's store was to close for good Sunday night, ending more than a century of department store retailing in the heart of Minnesota's largest city.
Rose Smith from Robbinsdale was among the shoppers Sunday. Smith says "it's a sad day for me."
For decades the property was the headquarters and flagship store of the Dayton Co., forerunner of Target Corp., founded by the father and uncles of Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton.
The location will now likely be home to other stores and offices. Macy's has sold the property to 601W, a New York firm that intends to redevelop it as mixed office and retail space.
