Father Accused of Trying to Kill Children, Himself

LAKEVILLE (AP) - Police say two young children are safe after their father attempted to kill them and himself in Lakeville.

Authorities say a family member found the father and his sons, ages 2 and 4, in a running vehicle in a closed garage with a hose routed from the exhaust pipe to car's interior early Thursday.

The family member called police, but the father had fled with the children in the vehicle by the time officers arrived. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension issued an Amber Alert to help locate the father and children.

Burnsville police found them a short time later and the father was arrested. Authorities say the children appear to be OK.

Lakeville police say the man had made suicidal statements to family members in recent days.
