MANKATO (AP) — A former Minnesota quarterback has been charged with assault for allegedly kicking a former Minnesota State linebacker in the head, leaving the victim critically injured.

Twenty-year-old Philip Robert Nelson was charged Monday with first-degree assault and third-degree assault.

Authorities say he kicked 24-year-old Isaac Dallas Kolstad in the head after another man punched and knocked him to the ground early Sunday morning as the bars were closing in Mankato.

Police are still looking for the other man.

Kolstad remains in critical condition at a local hospital. His family says he suffered severe head injuries, and the criminal complaint says doctors aren't sure if he'll survive.

Police released surveillance video of events surrounding the altercation and are asking for the public's help.
