St. Cloud Municipal Band Presents “Let’s Dance”

Come hear the St. Cloud Municipal Band present “Let’s Dance,” its spring concert at the Paramount Theater in St. Cloud on Monday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. This concert will feature St. Cloud area jazz musicians Rich Witteman (cornet), Bruce Thornton (clarinet), Ken Vork (trombone), Michael Lauer (guitar & banjo), Jeffrey Engholm (bass), John Harland (piano) and Terry Vermillion (drums). They will play a piece for jazz band and concert band by Frank Ticheli called Playing With Fire – a showstopper three-movement work that draws on traditional Dixieland and early jazz blues styles. The concert opens with an energetic new work for wind band by Iowa-based composer Zack Stanton entitled Urban Sunrise. This piece has appealing dance rhythms and light playful melodies. The program includes beloved English and Irish folksongs representing both ballads and traditional jigs and reels. Other dance styles in the program include Argentine tangoes made popular by composer Astor Piazolla and the King of Pop Michael Jackson. A dynamic tribute to band member and clarinetist Harry Dinndorf, who played in the Municipal Band for over 50 years will also be included in the concert.

The St. Cloud Municipal Band is conducted by Dr. Catharine Bushman and Associate Conductor Lowell Larson. Dr. Bushman is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of the Wind Ensemble and Campus Band at St. Cloud State University. The concert is free but a goodwill offering will be taken. This is the Municipal Band’s second performance at the Paramount Theater this season. The Municipal Band is made of adult musicians from around the Central Minnesota region drawn together by their love of music. The band performs annually at Barden Park and Hester Park in St. Cloud, for local area nursing homes and in outreach concerts at area high schools. The band has begun plans to travel to Spalt, Germany in Summer 2018.
