Jackie's Story

25-year-old Jackie Wilwerding of Freeport, MN grew up loving the outdoors and finding ways to help those in her community. When Jackie wasn’t outside enjoying God's creation she was working hard pursuing her nursing degree at SCSU. Jackie became ill with the flu in 2013, which changed her life. Jackie continued to battle many mysterious illnesses, all attacking her respiratory system. She spent months in and out of Saint Cloud Hospital and The U of Minn, and eventually her care was moved to Mayo Clinic. Jackie’s care team struggled to find a cure.

While searching for answers, Jackie went through multiple surgeries for issues contributing to her continued illness. She was diagnosed with COPD and ciliary dysfunction which prevent Jackie’s lungs from providing her body with the life-giving air it needs. The tissue in her lungs is not able to effectively absorb and utilize oxygen. Her body also struggles to filter environmental impurities that we all breathe every day. Due to the damage to her respiratory system, her lungs repeatedly fill with fluids in a toxic response to these diseases.

This year, Jackie has experienced a sharp decline in health. The tests, surgeries, and expensive medications are no longer providing the healing she needs. Her doctors feel that she may be running out of time and treatment options. Throughout all of this, Jackie has held on to an unwavering sense of hope and resilience, never losing sight of her calling to be a light in the lives of others. Jackie’s doctors have now developed a medication based on her DNA that they hope will manage the fluid in her lungs. This new treatment could mean a breakthrough for Jackie’s breathing, but it comes at a very high financial cost with limited insurance coverage. Every day, Jackie wakes up knowing she will have to battle to breathe. We stand with her to fight this battle together. Jackie isn’t giving up, and neither are we.
