DULUTH (AP) — Smelt on a stick? Smelt heads? Smelt royalty?

It's all part of an event in Duluth that was created to celebrate a rite of spring — the smelt run.

Jim Ouray founded the Run Smelt Run parade last year. He says he thought an event celebrating the smelt run would have potential.

This year's parade is on Sunday, and ends with a smelt fry.

In the days leading up to the parade, adults and children were busy crafting their props, including small silver fish on sticks, smelt heads and smelt crowns.

Anyone who wants to be part of the parade is asked to get into the spirit by wearing silver or black and blue.
