ST. CLOUD - A boom in students has forced the St. Cloud Area School Board to close open enrollment to the district's Madison Elementary.

Superintendent Bruce Watkins says both in-district and out-of-district open enrollment will end after this school year.  However, he says students currently open enrolled won't have to change schools, and families will not be split up.  Also, students interested in the Chinese Immersion program will still be able to open enroll.

Madison elementary has a capacity of about 750 students, but this year they have nearly 800.  Students and staff have been forced to use halls and closets as classrooms and offices.

Watkins says more decisions will need to be made in the future to further address the overcrowding issue.
