ST. PAUL (AP) - Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has spoken by phone with Target Corp.' chief executive Brian Cornell ahead of an in-person meeting about big job cuts coming to the retailer's Minneapolis headquarters.

Dayton said Thursday that Cornell called him to discuss a company plan to shave several thousand positions, primarily at the corporate headquarters. They are due to meet in person, along with Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, next week.

The governor has requested more details about the timetable and how affected employees will be treated. Dayton he fears young and talented people will be recruited by other companies outside Minnesota.

Dayton says the state can assist with job services for laid-off workers but no direct public subsidy to Target is planned.

Cornell and Dayton have had only casual meetings to date.
