Dayton Starts Special Session Legwork for Mille Lacs Lake

ST. PAUL (AP) - Gov. Mark Dayton is moving quickly to call a special session to provide relief for the Mille Lacs Lake area.

Walleye fishing is an integral part of the Mille Lacs Lake economy, driving tourists to resorts and other businesses. But state officials say they may have to end walleye season in early August once fishers meet the lake's harvest quota.

Dayton was set to meet with Mille Lacs tourism officials Wednesday afternoon to discuss the situation. Lawmakers are expected to assemble a working group to hash out the scope and size of a relief package that may involve zero interest loans, property tax abatements and other funding.

Dayton says he wants to call a special session as soon as the end of next week.
