Dayton: Bill Changing Teacher Layoffs is Premature

ST. PAUL  (AP) – Gov. Mark Dayton is suggesting he will veto a bill that would let schools lay off teachers by factors other than seniority alone.

The legislation would let districts consider teacher evaluations when making layoffs. It’s likely to reach Dayton’s desk soon.

Dayton said he agrees that changes are necessary in the seniority system. But he says an evaluation system hasn’t been fully set up and it will take time to make sure the evaluations are done well.

Told it sounds like he won’t sign the bill, Dayton said that was “probably correct.”
