COLLEGEVILLE - The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University have each been given observer status to the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris.

A group of faculty and students will attend the convention this December.

Jessica O'Reilly is an assistant professor of anthropology and lead author of the schools application for the convention, she says students will be able to watch the diplomatic proceedings.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an international body that addresses climate change and its global impact. It was established in 1992 and meets annually to work on climate agreements.

O'Reilly says the trip will give students a new international view on climate change.

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University are a few of the select liberal arts schools to receive observer status.

O'Reilly adds that climate change is a growing international issue.

A new course on climate studies will be offered at the schools this fall and will be required for students selected as delegates.
