BRAINERD (AP) - Authorities have released the name of the man fatally shot by sheriff's deputies after he shot and wounded a deputy in rural Brainerd.

Crow Wing County sheriff's officials identify the man as 50-year-old Donald Peter Johnson.

Dispatchers received a call around 1 p.m. Wednesday from Johnson, asking that deputies be sent to his home. When deputies arrived, they heard gunshots and found Johnson, armed with a handgun, in a tree stand.

Deputies negotiated with Johnson, who started to come down from the tree. But he began to go back up the tree and shot a deputy in the arm. Deputies returned fire, killing Johnson.

The wounded deputy was treated and released. The deputy's name is being withheld for now.
