ST. CLOUD -- Over 500 athletes gathered at St. Cloud State University to compete in the third annual Granite Games.

Each year this Cross Fit event continues to grow, testing an athletes physical and mental skills.

John Swanson is the director of the Granite Games and says there is no other event where everyday people can go against professional athletes.

"You have athletes who are learning the sport, out there competing against with professional athletes."

Competitors participate in five different divisions. Workouts include activities that test your endurance, stamina and strength, and are scored based on how fast you can complete it.

"We wanted something that represented the St. Cloud area and that could be nationally known as well."

Tyson Tahasaln is competing in the Granite Games and says athletes need to remember to have fun with it.

"Just relax and have fun. Yes the days can get long, but bring some friends to cheer you on, cause these are the experiences you should share with them."

Also you don't have to be an elite athlete to try out the sport.

"You don't need to be an athlete or competitive to do this. Once you try it you will understand why so many people join in," says Swanson.

The games started yesterday (Friday) and will go until late Sunday night.
