Coalition Challenges Voter ID Amendment

MINNEAPOLIS — Several groups are asking the Minnesota Supreme Court to remove a constitutional amendment from the November ballot that would require voters to present photo IDs.

Their petition says the wording of the ballot question is misleading. Charles Samuelson, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Minnesota chapter, says it also fails to inform voters of election law changes that could undermine their right to vote.

The effort includes the League of Women Voters of Minnesota, Jewish Community Action, and Common Cause of Minnesota, plus five individuals.

The Legislature approved the ballot question this spring in a largely party-line split. Republicans say ID is a common-sense measure to block voter fraud. Democrats argued there’s little evidence of such fraud in Minnesota, and photo ID would discourage some people from voting.
