Coal Boilers Removed At St. John’s University

COLLEGEVILLE (AP) - It's looking a little greener around St. John's University in Collegeville.

The university is making plans to expand its solar farm that provides some of the electricity on campus. And, it's removed the coal boilers installed in the 1940s.

University officials looked at economic and environmental costs when making plans to power the campus into the future. Brother Benedict Leuthner says it just didn't make sense to continue burning coal.

Best Power International has a grant from Xcel Energy to install additional solar panels at the campus. Best Power president Dwight Jelle says the new system could be built this fall or in 2015 at the latest.
