The Minnesota Wild won 4-3 at home against San Jose Sunday night. Matt Cullen and Jed Ortmeyer each scored a goal in the 3rd period to go from down 3-2 to leading 4-3. Ortmeyer's goal was the first of the season for him. Cal Clutterbuck and Nick Schultz also scored a goal for the Wild and Niklas Backstrom had 26 saves for Minnesota. The Wild are 28-25-9 and with 65 points are in 12th place in the Western Conference.
Twins relief pitcher Joel Zumaya tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and is done for the season. The MRI confirmed the injury on Sunday. Zumaya lasted just 13 pitches into his first session of live batting practice before he experienced pain in his right elbow and had to leave the mound. Zumaya was coming back from a broken elbow in 2010 and hasn't pitched in a major league game since June of 2010.
The West beat the East in the NBA All Star game in Orlando, Florida Sunday night. Kevin Durant of Oklahoma City had 36 points for the West and was named the Most Valuable Player. Kobe Bryant of the Lakers scored 27 points and became the all time points leader in All Star games surpassing Michael Jordan. Kevin Love of the Timberwolves had 17 points and 7 rebounds while playing for the West.
The Gopher men's basketball team has lost 5 straight games after falling 69-50 at home against #23 Indiana at Williams Arena Sunday afternoon. Austin Hollins led the Gophers with 14 points. Minnesota went out to a 6-0 lead only to allow 9 straight points for the Hoosiers. Christian Watford led Indiana with 12 points.
The St. Cloud State men's and women's basketball teams both lost at home to Concordia-St. Paul Saturday afternoon to close the regular season. The SCSU men fell 93-89 after the women lost 68-65. The St. Cloud State men trailed by 9 at halftime and couldn't catch up in the 2nd half. Tim Bergstrasser led the Huskies with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Shaun Jensen added 24 points for SCSU. The St. Cloud State men finish the regluar season with a 19-7 record and 15-7 mark in the NSIC.
The St. Cloud State men's hockey team lost 3-2 at Michigan Tech Saturday night after beating Michigan Tech Friday night 5-2. Nick Jensen scored on the power play in the 3rd period to tie the game at 2 but Blake Pietila scored the game-winner for Michigan Tech in overtime. Nic Dowd scored the other St. Cloud State goal and Mike Lee had 25 saves.
The Minnesota Wild lost 4-1 at Dallas Friday night. The Stars scored 2 first period goals and 1 in the 2nd to take control of the game. Devin Setoguchi scored the lone Minnesota goal and Niklas Backstrom had 11 saves before he was replaced by Mathew Hackett who had 10 saves.
The Twins start full squad workouts in Fort Myers, Florida today. All players were required to arrive Thursday. First baseman Justin Morneau were among the last players to arrive. He is coming off a season littered with injuries including his fight with concussion symptoms. General Manager Terry Ryan says Morneau is healthy and ready to go.
The Minnesota Wild downed Florida 3-2 in an overtime shootout Thursday night. Erik Christensen and Matt Cullen each scored a goal in the shootout and Florida failed to score a goal in the shootout. Kyle Brodziak and Matt Cullen each scored a goal in regulation and Niklas Backstrom had 41 saves for Minnesota.
