WAITE PARK -- Walk into the Cash Wise in Waite Park and you'll see something different -- a new record for the world's largest pineapple display.

Nearly 17,000 pineapples were assorted in the display last (Thursday) night, which features a mock volcano. The display beat the previous record of 14,800 set last summer at a store in Virginia.

"We said, 'hey, we can do that'," says Store Director Ranji Lachmensing. "We didn't want to just beat it by a little bit, so we went big."

Lachmensing says the display, weighing over 50,000 pounds, took until 2:00 a.m. to set up the two full truckloads of pineapples.

The display is not only a fun way for the store to kick off summer, as Lachmensing says 25 cents from each pineapple sold will go to the Coborn Cancer Center.

"We have something for our guests to see that's different -- when can you say that you've seen the world's largest pineapple display?" Lachmensing says. "To also do something good for the community at the same time is a great feeling."

"A lot of hard work went into building this but it's also great to give back -- any time you can do that, I view that as a win-win."

The pineapples will be on display until Monday morning, when the pineapples will be split up and dispersed to other store locations around the state.
