NEW LONDON  (AP) — Police coverage in New London is being cut nearly in half next year in order to save money.

The New London City Council approved a reduced contract for police protection from the Kandiyohi County sheriff's office earlier this week.

The city's current contract is for 20 hours a week from May through September and 15 hours a week for the winter months.

City Administrator Trudie Guptill says cutting the service to 10 hours a week all year in 2012 will result in annual savings of nearly $12,500. Guptill says the decision was totally financial.

The council is making other budget reductions next year, including reducing the hours it contracts for the building inspector it shares with the city of Spicer.
