Blind Reading Tutor Gets Ready For Law School

BROOKLYN CENTER, (AP) - As a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor, Jordan Richardson didn't think his blindness would be a deterrent to helping his elementary school students. Neither did the children.

The 23-year-old Richardson has completed the year at Earle Brown Elementary School in Brooklyn Park and is headed to law school this fall.

Richardson says he talked to his 4- and 5-year-old students about his disability when the year began. He says it wasn't a big issue to them - being blind has no relevance to reading.

Richardson says he has less than 5 percent vision and relies on a packet of handmade cards marked visually and in Braille to teach his students. The preschoolers say they consider their teacher a big kid who sat with them in miniature chairs and made reading fun.
