The girls high school basketball section playoffs are set to get underway Tuesday night with a handful of local teams taking the court. Other teams will begin their trek to the state tournament on Thursday night.
Wednesday's guests included Alan Horton of the Minnesota Timberwolves (Hour One), Tom Elliott from the St. Cloud Times (Hour Three), Rob Mehrwerth and Scott Gorecki (Foley Wrestling) to talk state wrestling tourney (Hour Four) and Apollo's Pete Matanich and Cathedral's Eric Johnson to preview the Section 6A hockey final (Hour Four).
Cathedral boys hockey coach Eric Johnson and Apollo coach Pete Matanich have been friends since the pair were in college together. Now as coaches of crosstown rivals, they will meet on the ice Thursday night to battle for the Section 6A hockey crown and a berth in the state tournament. (7 PM, WJON.com)
The Tigers were walloped the first time the teams met this season, with the Spuds winning 79-37 in Moorhead. However, the Tigers have improved greatly as a team since then, and have rattled off four straight wins entering tonight's contest.
The #2-seeded Cathedral Crusaders will take on #4-seed Apollo at the MAC in St. Cloud Thursday night in the Section 6A boys hockey championship game. A berth in the MSHSL State Tournament will be on the line.
