Archbishop Responds to Sexual Misconduct Concerns

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Archbishop John Nienstedt says he accepts responsibility for addressing fresh concerns about clergy sexual misconduct in the archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

And he tells reporters he regrets that a growing number of parishioners and priests have lost confidence in him.

But in an email response to reporters questions, he denies any abuse cover-up or illegal actions. And he repeats the archdiocese's assertion that there are no offending priests in active ministry.

He says he's committed to finding the truth and fixing problems that exist. He says his highest priorities are ensuring children's safety and restoring trust.

Reports say it's the first time Nienstedt has answered media questions since a whistleblower began raising questions about how archdiocese officials have handled allegations of clergy sexual misconduct.
