APPLETON, Wis. (AP) - An Appleton resident has been diagnosed with tuberculosis and is being treated in isolation.

The city's health department made the announcement Friday.

Health Director Kurt Eggebrecht says officials are looking into who the infected person had contact with over the past several months. The investigation will determine who's at risk of exposure and those people will be screened.

The sick person works at Winnebago Mental Health Institute, and information has been sent to staff there. The person also received treatment at Affinity Health System, so some workers there will be screened as necessary.

The Centers for Disease Control says tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually infects the lungs. If can be fatal if not treated properly. It's spread through the air but not easily transmitted.
