Alvin was born February 4, 1925 in Alberta Township, Benton County to Thomas and Rose (Mastey) Novak. He married Lorraine Youso on October 17, 1950 at St. John's Catholic Church in Foley. He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Brennyville, MN. He was also a member of the Crosier Apostolate in Onamia, MN, the Carpenter's Union #851 and the Foley American Legion. He served his country in WWII in the Merchant Marine from 1943-1946 and then served in the U.S. Army from 1949-1950. In the early 1970's he started his own roofing company, shingling many houses in the Twin Cities area and throughout the state of Minnesota, a trade he taught his sons and grandsons. In his retirement years, Alvin spent many hours with his nephew, Greg, on the family farm where he was raised.

The most important part of Alvin's life was his faith and family. He loved to tease the younger children by "taking their noses" or “pulling their ponytails” and he was always up for a game of cards, 500 or cribbage, with the older children. He looked forward to any family gathering where he could spend his time visiting with everyone.

Alvin is survived by his wife Lorraine; sons and daughters: Bradley (Doreen) Novak of Becker, Brenda (Vern) Jurek of Becker, Bruce (Lois) Novak of Cambridge, Barbara (Chris) Kotsmith of Foreston, Bryan (Cindy) Novak of Coon Rapids, Bernard (Tammy) Novak of Aitkin, Bonnie (Todd) Warren of Sartell, Beth (Paul) Roberts of Lawton, IA, and Blaine (Lisa) Novak of New York Mills; sisters: Rosemary Pulczinski, Eileen Bialke, and Betty Motschke-Brenny; 50 grandchildren and 80 great grandchildren.
