Alcohol Education Required For UMinn Freshmen

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The University of Minnesota is trying to head off problems with high risk drinking by requiring freshmen to take an alcohol education class.

The university sent out emails to incoming freshmen this summer with a link to the online class. Each of the 1,672 new students were required to complete the first part of the course by welcome week.

The course is a combination of surveys, questions and videos about alcohol safety and how students use and think about alcohol. Students take the second part of the course next month after they've been in school for a while.

Dave Golden helped establish the course at the University of Minnesota. Golden says hundreds of other universities are using the class, including the University of Wisconsin.
