ACLU, Student And Minnewaska School District Settle Lawsuit

ST. PAUL (AP) – The Minnewaska School District and a student represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota have settled a lawsuit over her Facebook posting critical of a teacher’s aide.

The school district has agreed to pay $70,000 to settle the 2012 case involving a former sixth-grader, Riley Stratton, now 15 years old. The ACLU argued the school district violated Stratton’s rights when they viewed her Facebook and email accounts.

According to the lawsuit, Stratton was given detention after posting disparaging comments about the staffer on Facebook, even though she was at home and not using school computers. The ACLU also said school administrators viewed her online conversations with a boy because of a complaint the two were using computers to talk about sex.

Superintendent Greg Schmidt says the district thought Stratton’s mother had given permission when it viewed her accounts.
