BENTON COUNTY -- A truck reported stolen in March of 2000 was found at the bottom of a lake yesterday (Sunday).

The Benton County Sheriff's Office says they received a call at about 2:00 p.m. from an individual who was fishing on Mayhew Lake, when he spotted what was believed to be a pickup truck with his underwater camera.

Deputies responded to the scene and found the truck in about 12 feet of water, 100 yards north of the public access point and 25 yards from the west shore.

The Stearns/Benton Dive Team was called in to search the truck but found it to be empty and the area around the truck did not contain any items of value.

A registration search on the license plate showed the truck had been reported stolen back in 2000 from an address in Graham Township in Benton County.

Authorities attempted to retrieve the truck but were unsuccessful due to the thin ice.

Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck says the truck will be recovered in the near future when conditions allow.
