St. John's alum donates $1 million for summer research

COLLEGEVILLE -- St. John's University has received a $1 million gift to start scholarship research program.
Dan and Katharine Whalen have donated the money to start the "John Brandl Scholars" program.
The endowment will fun summer research projects conducted by students and faculty.
Whalen graduated from St. John's in 1970. Brandl graduated from St. John's in 1959.
Besides graduating from St. John's, Brandl also taught at the school.
He also held positions at the federal level in the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense, Office of Economic Opportunity, and several other positions.
He served in the Minnesota State Legislature for 12 years.
