COLLEGEVILLE -- The recently resigned President of St. John's University has died.
Brother Dietrich Reinhart was 59.
He was diagnosed with malignant metastatic melanoma back in September then stepped down from his post to undergo treatment. He died today at his retirement center at St. John's Abbey.
Reinhart, born as Thomas Edward Reinhart became Brother Dietrich Reinhart when he entered St. John's Abbey in 1971. He attended the School of theology from 1972-to-1974, received a master's degree from Brown University in 1976 and doctorate in 1984.
Reinhart taught at St. John's in the early 1980's before being named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1988. In 1991, the board of Regents elected Reinhart as university president -- a position he held until he stepped down following his diagnosis.
Reinhart also won several awards, including the St. Gregory Award for founding the St. John's Boys' Choir and in October of this year, the Board of Regents started the Benedictine Institute at St. John's in his honor.
Reinhart oversaw numerous capital improvement projects during his tenure and grew enrollment at the school by nine-percent over that time.
Services for Reinhart will be Tuesday, January 6th at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's Abbey.
