"Foot Soreness"
Q. I have a persistent soreness in the arch of my right foot.  I wear different shoes for different activities, so I don’t think it’s being caused by spending too much time in a particular pair that isn’t fitted properly for my feet.  In fact, I’m usually pretty good about getting my feet measured anytime I buy shoes.  Is there anything I can try to help with the problem before I visit a doctor? Sam from Sartell
A.  Most people with this concern are experiencing a condition called plantar fasciitis.  This is due to a ligament strain in the arch of the foot.  Trying to wear a well fitted athletic shoe whenever possible both in and out of the home is a good start.  A good calf stretch two to three times a day for both legs is also quite helpful.  Ice to the heel and arch at the end of a long day is very helpful to reduce inflammation of the ligament also.

"Reducing Corns"
Q. What can I do to help with the problem I have with corns?  I’ve had them for years.
Mary Lou from Motley
A. This condition is usually due to a chronic hammertoe or “bending of the toes” causing pressure against shoes when walking.  It is best to try a better fitting shoe such as a extra depth shoe with a larger toe box as a first alternative.  Beyond that there are several over the counter corn pads that can be tried, but be cautious to avoid those that are medicated with salactic acid.  This type of treatment can cause serious skin irritation if used too often.  Final treatment usually requires surgical straightening of the affected toe or toes.

"Ligament Strains"
Q. I twisted an ankle pretty good while playing pick-up basketball a few months back.  It doesn’t seem to be coming around very well.  I continue to have soreness and tenderness with it.  Is there anything I can try to help it recover?  Paul from Annandale
A.  This residual pain is due to a lingering ligament strain or tear of the ankle.  Conservative treatment is started with an appropriate ankle brace for use during walking on uneven surfaces.  First try using a lace up type and a good supportive shoe.  If symptoms haven’t improved within 4 to 6 weeks then an ankle rehab program outlined by a podiatrist or physical therapist is recommended.  Generally if pain and instability has persisted for more than 3 months an xray of the ankle is appropriate.
