ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A 72-year-old woman had to be rescued from Lake Elmo after she jumped in to save her dog.

Washington County sheriff's deputy Tom Stafford says the woman and her dog were walking along the shore when the dog either jumped or fell in.

Stafford says the woman went in after the dog and didn't realize how deep and cold the water was.

He says she clung to a fishing pier for five to 10 minutes before a passerby who was docking his pontoon boat heard her cries and pulled her out.

Stafford says the woman eventually warmed up and returned to her vehicle without any need for extensive medical treatment. It did not appear the dog suffered any lasting health consequences.
