ST. PAUL (AP) - A boy is in critical condition after he and his older brother were pulled from an abandoned swimming pool filled with 6 feet of dirty water outside a St. Paul apartment building.

St. Paul Fire Marshal Zaccard says the older boy saw his brother struggling in the water Monday afternoon and got in to save him, but also got into trouble.

Firefighters were called to the scene but couldn't see the boys. According to Zaccard, the firefighters jumped into the pool littered with toys and trash, and they found the boys after searching blindly.

Zaccard says the boys, both under the age of 10, were taken to a hospital. He says the older boy is expected to recover, but the younger boy was in critical condition.

According to Zaccard, the pool was surrounded by a chain-link fence.
