1 Dead, 1 Injured, in Officer-Involved Shooting in Rockville

ROCKVILLE – One man was shot and killed, and the suspect was shot by police, early this (Sunday) morning in Rockville.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Department says the incident began at about 4:00 a.m. when they received a report of a man with a gun at 301 Broadway Street East in Rockville, on a report of an altercation in a home. The fight moved outside, where a man was shot and the shooter fled.

When officers arrived they found a victim with gunshot wounds near the intersection of Elm Street and 4th Street East.  The victim died as a result of the gunshot wounds.  He’s been identified as 30-year-old Jeffrey Schutz of Rockville.

Authorities then searched the area for the suspect.  Sherriff John Sanner says deputies found the suspect nearby about 8 a.m. The sheriff says the suspect was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun. He says the gunman raised a weapon at the deputies, who shot him. He has been taken to St. Cloud Hospital.  A nursing supervisor at St. Cloud Hospital says the suspect is in critical condition.  He’s been identified as 28-year-old Marcus Barshaw of Walker.

The deputy involved in the shooting is a 6 1/2 year veteran of the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, and is also a member of the SERT Team.  He has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard.
